The White House

The White House

by Leonard Everett Fisher

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Quattlebaum
Fisher's text and historical photographs provide an interesting overview of this famous residence. From the blueprints of architect James Hoban to the Reagan years when thirty-two layers of paint were chemically removed, The White House captures the changing times through a review of alterations undertaken at the presidential home.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-8-- This is more than a casual tour of the White House. Fisher allows visitors to join the ungracious mobs who trampled into the north entrance on the occasion of Andrew Jackson's inauguration and to crawl under the presidential desk with John-John Kennedy. Readers will learn of the competition between Jefferson and Hoban for designing this home which George Washington envisioned as elegant and imposing, yet distinctly different from the ornate castles of British royalty. The tour traces American history from the perspective of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue; it includes many anecdotes about former presidents and their families, the home's inconveniences and new innovations, the wear and tear caused by children and visitors, the maintenance and renovation problems, the joyous and grief-filled occasions which have added to the warmth and respect we feel for this famous American landmark. The fascinating and very readable text is complemented with unusual and well-chosen photos: an 1877 gathering of the servants, the Wright Brothers landing on the South Lawn in their new ``flying machine,'' and the sheep that were used as lawnmowers during the World War I staff reduction period. A fine book for reports, as a supplement to American studies, and for families visiting our nation's capital. Another outstanding treat from an author who has contributed much to our enjoyment and knowledge about our country and its history. --Miriam Hansen, Eau Claire Public Schools, WI
