The Wide Weird World of Henry Jacobs/The Fine Art of Goofing Off [CD & DVD]

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Rick Anderson
The origins of the CD part of this CD-plus-DVD set lie under the floorboards of an old house in Mill Valley, CA, where the new owner found a grimy box of reel-to-reel tapes. Upon further inspection, they were found to belong to sound experimenter Henry Jacobs, who had lived in the house before moving to a more remote location in Marin. The tapes were cleaned up and restored, and selections of their content are presented here as The Wide Weird World of Henry Jacobs. Listening to this disc isn't exactly a musical experience, although there are occasional snatches of music here and there. It's really more of a window into the mind of one of America's quirkiest sound artists, a man who took delight in created wild collages of found sound, interviews (both real and fake), crank calls, and field recordings. The DVD contains three half-hour television programs, each titled "The Fine Art of Goofing Off," that Jacobs created in 1972 for San Francisco public television. Consisting of crude animation, stop-action photography, collage, and his unique tapestries of sound, these shows are dated but utterly delightful.
