Overview

From the old world elegance of Budapest to the opulence of Manhattan and the glittering capitals of Washington, London, and Paris, comes a magnificent story of love and danger, passion and heart-stopping intrigue... Katalin and Steven: even as children in Hungary, they has shared a special bond. Then tragedy struck, cruelly tearing them apart. they would grow up separated by an ocean and an iron curtain... together only in their hearts. Now, after years of work and hardship, Steven has forged a new life in a new land, rising from the coal mines of Kentucky to the corridors of power to become the man who has everything—except the one thing he longs for the most... Now, Katalin has won fame as an internationally acclaimed pianist with an adoring public, a brilliant future, and a handsome, powerful husband. Yet night after night, she gives her most stung performance offstage-when she escapes her barren marriage to lead a dangerous double life... and now, Katalin and Steven have found each other once again—only to discover that walls of deceit still keep them apart. and for Katalin—called The Wild Rose for breathtaking beauty, her defiant spirit, and her unquenchable thirst for freedom—the moment has come when she must risk everything for the man who meant more to her than life itself.

The New York Times bestselling author of First Born and Rightfully Mine presents her most magnificent novel yet--a sweeping tale of passion and political upheaval. Named by the gypsies for her beauty, talent, and unquenchable spirit, Katalin Gaspar is the "Wild Rose." Katalin lives to fulfill two dreams: to honor the memory of her father's artistry through her own music; and to find the love lost to her when the Soviets invaded her beloved Budapest.

    Favorite book

This book is wonderful! I was 16 when I first read it and it has remained one of my favorite books (I'm now 24). While the pink and purple cover makes you think it's a pure romance novel, it is mainly a story of Katalin Gaspar's struggle through life and the effects of life behind the Iron Curtain ... with some romance thrown in there too. Music runs in the family and is an integral part of the story, making any music lovers eager to return to the art. Fabulous read and a quick read as well, despite the large size!

    The absolute best!

This is my first Doris Mortman book, and I have to say I haven't ever read an 800 page book in 2 days. I have to confess i'm 15 so when I went to Atlantic city with my parents, my mom could keep from laughing when I brought 'Wild Rose' with me... I can't gamble anyway! I love the romance as Katalin and Istvan meet again purely by accident in NY and fall in love again after last seeing each other as kids. And the angst when Istvan walks up to Katalin at her concert, probably to finally ask to marry her, only to be greated by Katalin's so called husband- the poor guy is heartbroken! This is a great book my only complaint is-it takes the main characters so long to finally find eachother and be together. A story that proves that America is the melting pot of the world!
