Wild Thingsby Betsy Duffey, Susanna Natti
The Pet Patrol tries to cope with the plight of a mysterious animal that has been raiding neighborhood trash cans every night.
School Library JournalGr 2-4-- A sequel to Puppy Love (Viking, 1992). Evie and Megan are trying to find out who is getting into the neighborhood trash cans. Matt and Joe are convinced that Evie's dog is the culprit and they want be allowed to join the girls' Pet Patrol club if they're right. The girls, however, are able to prove that a possum is guilty; it is returned to the wild and the boys decide to start a detective service. This simple story has more emphasis on plot than on character development. It moves quickly and should be popular with readers looking for easy chapter-book length mysteries. Of concern, however, is the age of the main characters; while their actions and the periodic black-and-white illustrations make them seem young, they run around on the streets after 9:30 P.M. and don't seem to have to tell their parents where they are. Also, the toilet-papering of trees on Halloween is more often associated with older children. --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
