Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Adventure abounds in this easy-to-follow book when brother and sister team Ben and Lucy Baxter, hook up with their city cousin, Gabe Sullivan for a campout in the Gila National Forest. Ben and Lucy are experienced campers. However, Gabe knows nothing about pitching a tent, following a forest map, or parts of nature that surface during a camping trip. Lucy's early mention of lizards, snakes, and mountain lions sets Gabe to thinking he may not be as excited to camp as he thought he was. But spotting a "lobster" in their tent, hearing the foreboding rattle of a nearby snake, and discovering petroglyphs soon has him diving into all of the camping adventures. A rainstorm forces the campers and their parents to move to a motel and then on to visit the White Sands National Monument. A road runner, a Gila Monster, and an albino lizard are other creatures the children spot. They go caving and sliding on sand dunes and earn Junior Ranger badges. The kids use practical logic and observations to create a unique, worthwhile experience. Throughout the story, Ben doles out nature and geographical information that he knows or finds in the guidebook. His material is interesting and not didactic. The tale's pace is perfect, the characters' personalities complement each other, and dialogue is true-to-form for first through third graders. The element of surprise is at the right level and intervals. This exciting book is from the "Junior Explorer Series" and it leaves the reader looking forward to another book with the same characters.
