Joel Douek is a veteran composer for film and television. His work here is effective when experienced in conjunction with the film for which it was intended. Listening to Mr. Douek's score on its own is a different matter. The unrelenting elegiac-mystical tone tends to make for monotonous listening without the visual counterbalance. The writing is chiefly expository with scant development or variety. Contributing to this meandering atmosphere is a monochromatic instrumental palette of primarily piano, strings and what sounds like synthesized voices and percussion. The recorded sound is artificial, flat, muddy and often overmodulated, probably the result of a less than careful mixdown. One small consolation: the closing song, "The Edge of Heaven" is strangely moving. For admirers of the film, this disc is a possible keepsake; all others will be disappointed.
