Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Detailed illustrations in deep, rich colors resembling tapestries create a beautiful animal alphabet book. Bold upper- and lower-case letters beneath each illustration are followed by a rhyming text that lends continuity: ``C is for Caterpillar/ Who eats a lot'' leads into ``D is for dragonfly/ Flitting by when it's hot.'' Each featured North American animal is depicted in its natural habitat and framed by a repetitive border of small illustrations of the animal. When presented by an adult, this book can be appreciated at many levels. Young children will recognize the letters, identify animals, and enjoy the lilting rhymes. Inquisitive older readers will be drawn to the borders that visually present facts about or aspects of animal life. Two pages of notes at the conclusion of the book offer background information on each animal. Thornhill's detailed art provides an interesting contrast with the simplicity of Bert Kitchen's Animal Alphabet (Dial 1984) and Wild Animals of America ABC (Lodestar, 1988) by Hope Ryden. An intricately woven book to return to again and again. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ
