Hardened by a life of slavery on Damall's Island, fourteen-year-old Oriel and his loyal companion Griff flee to the mainland where they experience the various hardships of war and struggle for power in medieval Europe. These range from the pathetic madness of the old woman Mary, to the ridiculous argument over colored neckerchiefs, to the brutal captivity under the Wolfer marauders. In the end, Oriel becomes a contender for the title of Earl of Sutherland in the kingdom previously described in Voigt's Jackaroo and On Fortune's Wheel. Recommended for older adolescents who wish to explore the psychological effects of violence and war where only the strong survive and loyalty is tested by omnipresent danger, this difficult and profound novel could be used to address the complex nature of modern societies where such atrocities are committed.

Gr 7-12-A wonderful, terrible, epic tale of heroism and cowardice, loyalty and betrayal, love and loss, joy and tragedy. Having escaped the harsh life on an island inhabited exclusively by boys abandoned or sold to the Damall, Oriel and his ever-loyal friend and follower, Griff, travel through unknown lands, followed by a three-year stay as journeymen to a saltweller. Then the Wolfers come, barbarian invaders from the north who destroy everything in their path. Oriel and Griff are taken prisoner and spend the next year on the run with them, until escape into the far mountains leads them finally to the farm of Beryl, puppeteer and herbalist (and granddaughter of Orien and Birle of On Fortune's Wheel [1990], great-great-granddaughter of Burl and Gwyn of Jackaroo [1985, both Atheneum]). After a season of healing, the trio devise a plan for Oriel to try his luck in a contest for the title, lands, and lady of the Earl of Sutherland. Be aware that this third novel is longer, harsher, and filled with mature themes before it reaches its satisfying conclusion. In the same way that Voigt's books about the Tillermans look at different members and generations of a family in ways that reinforce one another to form a coherent, many-volumed whole, these three books are tightly connected. Each volume stands on its own, but together they create a tapestry more complex, meaningful, and compelling than its individual parts.     Truly a Magnificent Read!

    The Wings of a Falcon by Cynthia Vogit is unforgettable. There are jewels of writing on every single page. It's pages are full of witty metaphors and passages that grip your heart strings in full bind. Definitely something to re-read and share with countless friends. I've read this book eleven times, and each time I am captivated by it's emotional and challenging story of two young boys on their journey through life. The setting is remarkable, a fantasy world that seems so real, and the characters seem to jump from the page and stand, breathing, right next to you. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

    A masterpiece

    This book was not so great in the beginning, but if you stick to it it pays off! This book has lots of adventure and action with a twist of romance. It will pull at your heartstrings at certain points. You may not understand it at first, but Voigt makes it all come together so perfectly at the end. One that will leave a big impression.

    Great!!!

    I'm a student from Minnesota and I love this book. I originally read it for a book report and I just fell into the plot. Oreil 'the main charecter' was a person that could really be anyone he wanted if he tried. That was something I caught immediately. He also reveals emotion more freely than other characters in different books. So, I recommend this book to ages 8-14.

    An Exceltn book, and a must read for anyone that can read!

    This book brings out the emotions of 2 young friends, in there journey threw life, and there forever lasting friendship, A book that includes something for everone, Action, Romance, Sadness, and Wonder, This is a must read, If your reading these reviews, You must go to your library, or go out and buy this book now! But make sure you have a clenex handy for scenes, and even more so when the book ends.

    Best Book!

    I read this book a few years ago and still haven't found anything that comes close. It's absolutely amazing. Whenever I pick it up again I always find something new. There are a number of dynamic characters and lots of action/adventure. No other book comes close.

    Very Involving Book

    This book is the type that takes you away from wherever you are and puts you in the character's place. It tells a very good fantasy tale with a world very unlike ours in a time where war rules the land. It is a page turner, and you want to keep reading until it's done.
