The Danish Collector's Classics label which is available through Storyville has been reissuing all of trumpeter Wingy Manone's recordings as a leader during his prime years on this series of CDs. Manone is heard in 1927 with his Harmony Kings, in 1928 with his Club Royale Orchestra a quintet, as a sideman with Benny Goodman in 1929, with the Cellar Boys the following year, and heading a group in 1930 under the name of Barbecue Joe and His Hot Dogs. There are 11 good-humored vocals by Manone and plenty of his trumpet along with significant appearances by such sidemen as tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman, drummer Gene Krupa, clarinetist Frankie Teschemacher, and pianist Art Hodes...

There are 11 good-humored vocals by Manone and plenty of his trumpet along with significant appearances by such sidemen as tenor saxophonist Bud Freeman, drummer Gene Krupa, clarinetist Frankie Teschemacher, and pianist Art Hodes the latter making his recording debut. Of particular interest is "Tar Paper Stomp," which in 1930 has the same basic melody as "In the Mood" which Glenn Miller made famous nine years later. This perfectly done reissue is highly recommended to classic jazz fans.
