Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Emily Griffin
Are you ready for Sochi? This guide to the Winter Olympics will deliver the history and traditions of the games, from the 1908 event to the most recent 2010 games in Vancouver. The Olympic Games have grown and changed over the years—the first games in London were really just adding figure skating to the Summer Olympics. But by 2010, more than 2,500 athletes from 82 countries participated in a wide variety of winter sports. Highlights of this development are covered. This 32-page nonfiction text also explains the symbols and ceremonies associated with the Winter Olympics. Color photographs, captions, and side bars enhance and modernize the text. Certain sports, stars, and stories from a variety of countries are briefly shared. Names like Lindsey Vonn, Apolo Ohno, and Sidney Crosby will likely be familiar to students. Others like Kim Yu-Na (South Korea) and Amy Williams (Great Britain) may be new. Unfortunately, not every photo identifies the athlete in it. The Winter Paralympics gets a spread, as do various controversies at the games. There are previews of the 2014 Sochi Olympics throughout—such as the knowledge that several new events, like the ski half-pipe, will be premiering—but the half-pipe also gets its own spread. A fact file, map, glossary, further resources, and index pages conclude the book. A well-done title about this exciting and timely topic, worthy of school and library purchase.
