Overview

In her stunning new novel, #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts proves why no one is better “when it comes to flawlessly fusing high-stakes suspense with red-hot romance” (Booklist).

Daughter of a cold, controlling mother and an anonymous donor, studious, obedient Elizabeth Fitch finally let loose one night, drinking too much at a nightclub and allowing a strange man’s seductive Russian accent to lure her to a house on Lake Shore Drive.

Twelve years later, the woman now known as Abigail Lowery lives alone on the outskirts of a small town in the Ozarks. A freelance security systems programmer, her own protection is supplemented by a fierce dog and an assortment of firearms. She keeps to herself, saying little, revealing nothing. Unfortunately, that seems to be the quickest way to get attention in a tiny southern town.

The mystery of Abigail Lowery and her sharp mind, secretive nature, and unromantic viewpoints intrigues local police chief Brooks Gleason, on both a personal and professional level. And while he suspects that Abigail needs protection from something, Gleason is accustomed to two-bit troublemakers, not the powerful and dangerous men who are about to have him in their sights.

And Abigail Lowery, who has built a life based on security and self-control, is at risk of losing both.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Twelve years ago, a young woman named Elizabeth went wild for just one night, and, eventually, tipsy and confused, wound up at the house of a man with a Russian accent. Now, obsessed with keeping her secret, she lives under an assumed name in a remote part of the Ozarks. Her intelligence and secretiveness have captured the attention of local police chief Brooks Gleason, who begins to wonder whether this quiet, attractive programmer might be harboring a dangerous secret. Once again, Nora Roberts snags our attention with a standalone novel of intense romantic suspense.

Jules Herbert

Publishers Weekly
In this powerful romantic suspense (Roberts's 200th novel, after Captivated), readers are introduced to a fascinating young woman trying to atone for a tragic act witnessed long ago. Though Elizabeth Fitch was a model daughter—a prodigy en route to med-school at 16-years-old—her dictatorial mother's "directives" cause Liz to rebel. After meeting some young members of the Russian mafia during the course of a wild night out, Liz witnesses a horrible murder, and is consequently placed in the Witness Protection Program. Twelve years later, when Liz settles on the outskirts of a sleepy Arkansas town as Abigail Lowery, chief of police Brooks Gleason is determined to find out from whence this reclusive newcomer came, and why. Though Abigail keeps to herself, she has been busily putting her hacking skills to use in plotting the downfall of the Volkov organized crime syndicate, whose ruthlessness changed her life. Unrelentingly kind, Brooks slowly breaks down the wall that Abigail has built around herself, and finds his work quickly ratcheted up from cuffing DUIs to helping Abigail find justice. Featuring one of Roberts's cleverest heroines yet, this intricately dramatic book only confirms that Roberts is a master of the genre. (Apr.)

Kirkus Reviews
A young woman in hiding from the Russian mob faces a difficult decision when she falls in love with a cop. Abigail, 28, lives alone in the bucolic hamlet of Bickford, Ark., in an isolated house, fortified with firearms, a state-of-the-art alarm system and a vicious dog named Bert. When the town's genial police chief, Brooks, suspects Abigail is packing while shopping for gourmet groceries, his curiosity soon morphs into courtship. Although she finds herself drawn to Brooks and to his welcoming, bohemian family, Abigail dares not reveal that her real name is Liz—which is not the only way in which she appears to be Roberts' answer to The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Gifted with an eidetic memory, an IQ over 200 and an affinity for cool, calculated mayhem, Liz/Abigail is a skilled hacker and a highly paid security consultant. In her spare time she investigates the Russian mob and the crooked federal agents who are responsible for her current predicament; whenever possible, she throws virtual monkey wrenches into the mob's Internet scams. When she witnesses an altercation between Brooks and the wastrel son of a local magnate, she's thrust back into the horror of the last time she witnessed a crime. At 16, rebelling against an unloving, controlling mother, Liz and a girlfriend, Julie, visited a Chicago nightclub run by the Russian Mafia, where Ilya, son of gang kingpin Sergei, and Alexi, a cousin, seduced them with Cosmos. Later, at Alexi's lakeside home, Liz was an unseen witness to a hit on Alexi by Sergei's enforcers, who also killed Julie. Managing to escape, Liz was forced to run again when two dirty FBI agents destroyed her safe house and murdered her guards. A person of interest to both the Feds and the mob, she's been on the lam for 12 years. Before they can marry, Brooks must help Liz come in from the cold. A promising start to a series, provided Roberts can flesh out her derivative heroine.

    The Witness

I like most of Nora Roberts books but this is a great read! I read it as quickly as I could because I liked the characters and dialog. Of course, I wanted the happy ending. I have read Nora Roberts books since she started publishing them. But I am really pleased at how strong her women characters are.

Nora's books tend to be excellent, and this one did not disappoint. The romance was a bit quieter than in some of her books, but that was in keeping with the characters. I was especially moved by Abigail's realizations about the nature of love, and what it means to be part of a relationship. I started the book last night, intending to read for about an hour, but ended up finishing the book-- it was engrossing enough that I didn't notice the passing of time!

I admit to being a diehard Nora Roberts fan so I always assume I'll like a book she writes. This one is going to the top of my list as an all-time favorite. The characters were great and I enjoyed seeing them develop. Got to love a man who can love a strong woman!

I have read everything written by Nora Roberts and love her style. The book flows and I read it in a matter of two nights. I love the characters but I admit that I miss her earlier style where there is more suspense and a bit more emotional highs and lows. Lately her books seem to get you on that heightened emotional state early and then the intensity plateaus until the end, which is a bit anticlimactic for this author. Still, love her books and will continue to read them and hoping for a bit more excitement.

This book was great! I do love her romantic suspense stories like this one. Reminds me a little of Angel's Fall. Loved the story and the different dynamics of the characters. This was a really satisfying book - great romance, great mystery, great conclusion. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

    Enjoyable!!

As a devoted NR fan, I can't help but read her books as soon as they are published. Her last few novels have been rather ho-hum, in my opinion. This one however, reminded me of why I came to enjoy her writing to begin with. Wonderful characters, suspense, and romance.

THE WITNESS is fast-paced, hard hitting and even harder to put down. Need to a lot enough time for it because it’s huge. Interesting, fully developed characters such as a social retard genius in the midst of small town, down to earth populous and always the bad guys round out the cast. Suspenseful plot-twists kept my nose in the book barely pausing to make a quick bathroom visit. I like this much better than the wedding series that I found quite “Ho hum”. This is one you should have no regrets having read it.

    Excellent job as always

I found this book to be highly entertaining, the plot was not predictable and it was easy flowing. Abigail was a loveable character and one of which I could relate to. Three dimensional characters and overall great dialogue. I definitely will recommend this for anyone who loves a great book and especially if you are a fan of Nora's. Loved it!

This is one of the best books by Nora Roberts in a long time. The character, Abigail, is really out of the norm for one of Roberts' books. A lot of Roberts' strong female characters sound like Eve Dallas. Abigail is tough, but her dialogue seems completely true and honest for a very intellectual woman. I loved the way she plotted her revenge and how she found justice for her friends without risking her new identity. Bravo, Ms. Roberts!

I love Nora Robert's books and this one did not disappoint.. I actually bought the audio version and could not get over how believable the characters were. Elizabeth/Abigal's voice sounds just like her character should, I don't know if I would have felt the same way about her if i had read the book instead of listening to it?.?
If you're looking for high suspense and lots of action this isn't the Nora Roberts book for you....stick with Eve and Rourke if you want action, but it was an excellent and believable love story without being sappy (if you know what I mean). Excellent book!!!!

    What to say...

I really don't know where to begin regarding everything I found annoying about this book. I bought it, expecting high suspense, likeable characters, a little realistic romance....a flowing plot. It was none of these things. Frankly, if thisis typical of Nora Roberts, I can't say I'd want to read another one.
It started out semi-interesting...then lapsed into full-fledged ridiculous. It was tiring to read of something happening, only to read it retold from one character to another. That got old and it happened quite a bit in the nook.
And there sure were a lot of random, unnecessary characters!!

I also don't get why we, the readers, should be expected to enjoy the romance of Liz/Abigail with Brooks when he was nothing short of uncharmingly pushy, as was his mother.
If you really must read, get it free from the library. Save yourself the money. I wish I had.

    Good book

I have been reading Roberts books for years, and have always gotten the new releases, but now I'll just be waiting for the paperback books to come out. Her books are getting to be the same thing over and over again, just different characters and situations. This had a good storyline, and it could have been better, if Roberts had spent more time on it. She has so much going on with her different series (will always buy hardcover, just released JD Robb books), that she's neglecting the book she's currently working on.
This story didn't have any action, which was kind of expected at the end. Big let down, the ending. And the male lead character is so unbelievable, with how quickly he wants a relationship. A happy love story, but pretty much 'Same old, Same old'.
