Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heidi Hauser Green
There is no place like home...there is no place like home...and no "Oz" like the original film. Just in time for the 75th anniversary of this Technicolor classic comes this attractive picture book. Photos from the movie are used to illustrate a concise, low-text version of the beloved film, interspersed with some movie dialogue. The book's only flaw is that it is so short; some things must be left on the cutting room floor. Unfortunately, that is what happens to Toto-threatening Miss Gulch. She is nowhere to be found in this slender volume (at least, not as herself). Also, the unveiling of the "great and powerful Oz" does not happen here; nor does his speech about how the heroes had the traits they sought all along. A picture book-visit with characters we know and love should be cause for celebration. Here, that celebration is tempered. Keep the book in case you need to remind little one is about important plot points. But pop some corn, and draw them in to the original. This does not quite measure up. Reviewer: Heidi Hauser Green
