Lifting the Veil: Book One

Kris Ellis thought that the time of arranged marriages was long past—but that was before the Great Unveiling revealed creatures of myth living among humans. Now a routine medical test has determined that Kris has a mate, a werewolf named Rafael King.

Kris is fresh out of college and has plans for his life. None of them include being tied forever to someone he’s never met. But then Rafe calls him, and Kris starts to reconsider. After all, what must it be like to wait for your soul mate for two hundred years?

Rafe is patient, strong, and kind, not to mention attractive. True to what Kris has heard about mates, sparks fly the second they meet. But Kris and Rafe are very different, and the werewolf way of life is dangerous. Is the fight for love really worth it?

    Not very good

This story is 200 pages on my Nook, and has enough plot to fill about a quarter of that. The rest is over-written filler. It's awkward, with too many adjectives, with unnatural dialogue, with contrived similes that are trying too hard, and altogether too much explaining and not enough actually happening. The 200+ year old werewolf keeps sobbing and tearing up, both characters are deeply hurt by fairly inoffensive comments, and to provide external conflict the author reaches for the tool used far too often by weak M/M authors: the irrational, shrieking caricature of a jealous woman.

The story is a whole lot of writing like this: "Fear gripped Kris with sharp nails as the prospect of being left to fend for himself with Rafe burned at his confidence as though it were made of something flammable."

Overall, it was a pretty tedious read.
