Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was a pioneer of the modern mystery/detective novel. He also wrote on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time. Highly influential, many later authors of mystery and detective fiction drew inspiration from Collins' works.

    Very good! This was definitely not an easy read, but it was worth it. Start the book when you can focus on it. It was a wonderful English tale in the early 19th century. The author did a great job of showing how little women had back then, in terms of property, choices, and freedom. It is both a mystery and a drama.

    Ok read, can be confusing at times.

    This is a good murder mystery book but at times I became confused on which character was which.
