Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Intended to spur interest in women's sports, this collection of 27 articles, excerpted from books or originating as magazine or newspaper articles, is a mixed bag. Loving memorials to Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Florence Griffith Joyner mingle with behind-the-scenes pieces about BASE jumpers (people who parachute illegally from skyscrapers and radio towers), ultra-marathoners (runners who often throw up pieces of their innards while completing 100-plus-mile races), and athletes who changed the face of their sports, such as Nancy Lopez, Nadia Comaneci, and Dorothy Hamill. Outstanding pieces, such as Paul Gallico's on Gertrude Ederle and Helen Jacobs's on her 1930s rival, Helen Wills, contrast with some ho-hum articles such as Jake Curtis's on Lisa Leslie and Edward Epstein's on Michelle Kwan. Although uneven as a whole, the writing entertains. Recommended for larger public libraries.--Kathy Ruffle, Coll. of New Caledonia Lib., Prince George, BC Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

    Nothing New Here

This is a sloppy assemblage of writing on women's sports which offers nothing new, intelligent or provocative to the subject. There are no classics reproduced here. The fact that the original publication dates for the 27 selections are not even given reflects the shoddy quality of this book. In addition, the author's biographies are inadequate and there is no index. (There aren't any photographs or illustrations, either.) This is a cheap, slapped together mish-mash which tells the critical reader that the publisher didn't want to shell out much money for truly good, inspired writing. In fact, three of the selections are from another anthology of women's sports writing, Lissa Smith's cheesy 'Nike Is A Goddess.' This is a real lazy piece of work and an embarrasment to women's sports literaure.
