    I Also Recommend:

Eltanin Publishing version is the one to get

I used to "buy" the free versions of all the classics, including the Wizard of Oz series. But the free versions don't have the illustrations. I didn't know what I was missing. But then I started looking at some of the Oz ebooks that do have the original illustrations. Some are terrible quality - only some of the images are included or they are really small or grainy. I'm so happy I stumbled upon Eltanin Publishing's series. They have done the first 4 books of the series so far. But something is wrong with the reviews - my reviews and others are showing up under other versions of the books. So make sure you find the Eltanin Publishing versions. They have ALL the images and they look great. I just search on "Eltanin Publishing" to find them.

People should know what they are getting into when buying this book. The story will vary from the movie. Nothing irks me more than when people complain about that...the book came first! It is a great, classic story and is wrapped beautifully in leather. Great addition!

Adults of my age waited every year for this to come on TV. It was a big event. It's so nice to have a copy of the book.

This is one of many Leatherbound Classics that I have purchased and it like the others does not disappoint. Beautiful leather cover makes this classic tale even more appealing.

Review admittedly not specific for this version...
I had never been much of a fan of the movie, and admit I don't recall much of it from my youth, but I'm quite sure there is a lot more to this book, even if it is terribly short. I very much enjoyed giggling at Mr. Baum's explanation for the story. In the copy I read (not sure if his forward is in this one or not), he states he intended this as a new style of fantasy tales for children. He was trying to get away from the old tales of fairys and dragons without losing the imaginative magic, but also trying to write something less scary... something more safe for young children to read or hear. Thinking of the movie and comparing it with the brothers Grimm, I figured he did a good job. Then I read this ... oh, my! While Grimm's tales might have frightened generations into youthful nightmares, they were not scary without cause. Wolves ARE frightening and dangerous... strangers should not be easily trusted.... and so on. I'm afraid Mr. Baum removed the fear, not the frightful realities. The lopping off of a creatures head, out of self-defense or not, is still rather creepy in my book. He simply made it sound matter of fact... no big deal. While less likely to cause nightmares, I find it just as disturbing to be so blasé about violence. But then, this was written in a much different time, and I'm sure that type of violence was much more common, thus not to be so fearful, even to a child.
A definite need-to-read for anyone who has seen the movie but never read the book.
