Use anything that looks like a miniature tree of the scale, height, and species you want to model. Use sage brush twigs for larger deciduous trees like mature oaks and cottonwoods. For birches and smaller deciduous trees, use pieces from a decorative broom. You can, of course, use anything that looks like a tree, from yarrow and goldenrod weeds; to herb and tree roots; to manufactured cast metal and plastic armatures.

Weathering with an air brush is easy to do and gives excellent results. Start with darker colors and add lighter colors on top. Line up all your cars, structures and loco’s and treat them assembly line style, then change colors and do it again and again. Remember, weathering is a matter of degree and most rolling stock is fairly clean.

Make grade crossings look real. Use thin black foam, black painted balsa wood, plastic strips (or even tongue depressors - 'painted' with a black Sharpie marker) as inserts to cover the railroad ties at road crossings - giving the crossing a more authentic look.

These tips are helpful but to receive complete and comprehensive information, ONLY this book "The Wonderful World of Model Trains" will give you the needed knowledge to lay out a great model train setup ---great book!

After having visited a railroad museum where I live and seeing the elaborate model trains running at the museum, this book intrigued me. I have no experience building model trains and this book was perfect for me because it is written for beginners (if you’re a seasoned model train builder, this book won’t be much use to you…). I like the fact that the book discussed the different options for scale, trains, scenery and had a glossary at the end in case I needed to reference it. It also gave me an idea of how much things would cost and how to plan a layout for maximum workability and track space. If you’re new to model trains or considering taking up the hobby, this is a great book to get you started!

The fact that model railroads can actually help breach the generation gap is fantastic. The history of the trains can be fun for both girls and boys. My grandchildren and I are having a ball with the train we are building and the information in this book has opened up new areas of interest for us all. The book is very specific and detailed as to how to actually build the railroad. The children and I are learning as we go along. And as the author stated it is “Just Plain Fun,”

The Wonderful World of Model Trains was a good guide for me and my grandson to have some fun together without spending tons of money on a video game that will eventually sit on the shelf.

The book has a good glossary in the back including the many different landscapes that can be used and the different sizes or scales of models that can use to have hours of fun.

It is an awesome conversation piece for neighbors and friends when they come over to visit! A great hobby for me and my grandson but also a great way to relieve some stress in a healthy way.

I bought this book to read with my son because we’re both new to model railroading. He found several boxes of old trains stored in his grandfather’s basement over Christmas vacation, so we let him look through it all. This book did a great job of explaining what all the components are and what we need to focus on when building our benchwork and track layout. It’s nice to be able to put a name to each piece instead of calling them all “doohickeys” or “thingamabobs.” The author gave some great ideas for possible themes to use when setting up the scenic layout.

Many people nowadays don't understand or appreciate why someone would want to invest time and money into a model train hobby. But as explained in this book there is so much more to the hobby than just a way to pass the time. The book is right in stating that model trains can be a bonding activity between the young and old and is a great mental stimulation for everyone. Not only is the history interesting but in some cases it can be good for your health! This book is great in that it explains the terminology associated with the hobby, including a glossary in the back. There is also step by step instructions for how to go about building your own model train set-up as well as the various ways you can customize it. In addition the book provides a guide on what trains to get and the differences in the materials an quality. All in all this book really gets at the lifestyle and joy that Model Train building can offer.

Great book for novice model train builders

I have always been interested in model trains but I had no clue where to start. I have to say I was a little intimidated by the process until I found this book. This is a great book for some one looking to start building model trains. The book provides beginners with all the steps that are needed to begin building. I liked that the author provides definitions for all the terminology so when shopping for the supplies you have some idea of what you are talking about. Every step of the process was so easy to understand and follow. The most helpful section for me was the one that described all of the different choices in setting up the wiring. I am not that familiar with wiring but I could understand everything that was described. Now that I have learned the basics I am able to teach my kids and they are loving it. Model train building has become a new found hobby for the entire family.

Great Way to Bond with Your Kids

This is a wonderful book in teaching people of today how to enjoy a pastime that was popular ages ago. The author, David Brokaw, does a great job of taking the beginner into a world that has been lost through modern technology. He lists many reasons why building model trains and the scenery is such a good hobby to spend time in. I initially got this book because my nephew always had a love for trains. We would play Thomas Train for hours when he was a little boy and we would construct different train tracks over and over. He would spend all his gift money on buying new Thomas Train characters. I thought it was sad that he "outgrew" Thomas Train later when I visited, but when I saw this book online, I thought I would see if I could help him recapture that love of trains again. Well, as Brokaw wrote, it was a great bonding and family time that we had together when I told my nephew that we would build a train set/track together - a very basic one of course, but still a train set. My nephew absolutely fell in love with the idea and we spend many enjoyable hours planning what our train set/track would include, etc. Okay, I must admit we have not actually built anything solid, but the hours of just discussing our train track was worth it. My nephew is really excited about my next visit because that is when we will actually start the project. I am my nephew's favorite aunt now!

This book is a must read for anyone interesting in model trains - either just for fun or seriously wanting to build your own tracks. It explains the lingos so if you are completely new, you will learn all the necessary language and will feel at home when you go out look to buy trains & tracks. It shows you how to lay tracks, set up your scenery & wiring, how to select trains, what models to consider, etc. I learned so much from this book that I highly recommend it.
