Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Ghigna, author, poet, and promoter of children's literature, is sometimes known as "Father Goose." In this "My Little School House" series reinforcing basic skills—letters, numbers, shapes—he combines his talents with those of Polish artist Jatkowska to explain colors and their interaction. The book's shape is square, the colors bright, while each page has its rhyming couplet, first to introduce primary colors red, yellow, and blue. Next, lively round-headed kids mix the secondary colors, combining two primaries to make orange, green, and violet. Further spreads show watercolors blending and an example of the results: a lime green hillside, orange Halloween pumpkins, and purple violets. Though black and white are not primary colors, Ghigna demonstrates mixing them to make gray for Jatkowska's rain clouds and puddles with dancing kids in primary-colored raincoats. ("Black and white turn into gray, / like a cloudy, rainy day.") A final review lines up the young artists, each displaying his or her painting in one of the six colors. The effect is cheerful with the focus on actively mixing and painting with the colors—though the illustrations are digital, they look like watercolor. Paintbox-bright endpapers add to the glow. Ghigna's rhyming couplets are simple and serviceable, quite suitable as nonfiction for the very young. Teachers and parents might explore the three recommended books, though experience with actual paint would be a natural follow-up. Reviewer: Barbara L. Talcroft
