Software millionaire Joe Tesla is set to ring the bell on Wall Street the morning his company goes public. The sudden dread of the outside is so debilitating, he can't leave his hotel at Grand Central Terminal, except to go underground. Bad luck for Joe, because in the tunnels lurk corpses and murderers, an underground Victorian mansion and a mysterious bricked-up 1940s presidential train car. Joe and his service dog, Edison, find themselves pursued by villains and police alike, their only salvation now is to unearth the mystery that started it all, a deadly, contagious madness on the brink of escaping The World Beneath.

Joe Tesla should be on the top of the world. He's a successful businessman and a millionaire. Suddenly his life changes. With no warning he develops agoraphobia (extreme fear of public places). Now he lives in the underground tunnels beneath Grand Central Station. While exploring his new realm, he meets a mysterious man and sees to much. He is now a hunted man. Will he live to tell his tale? Rebecca Cantrell's new series is a rewarding story filled with suspense, political intrigue and mystery, The book is set in the fascinating world beneath New York City. Joe Tesla is a multilayered character who adapts to his limitations and learns survival skills. Joe and Edison, his service animal, are an unbeatable team. All the characters grab your attention and draw you into the story. The plot is solid and the mixture of past and present add depth to the mystery. I couldn't put this book down. I'm hooked! I can't wait for Joe's next adventure.

Great main character. Brilliant software executive Joe Tesla became agoraphobic and now lives in NYC underground.  He stumbles upon a murder that develops CIA-connected bio-warfare program overtones.  Then using all his internet savvy it’s a race to save himself and side-track the program by discovering and revealing the individuals involved.  Cantrell has created a fabulous lead character through Tesla, and the supporting characters are equally enjoyable – hopefully an on-going assemblage. The storyline moved fast, with enough action and twists to keep the reader turning pages, and required very little suspension of disbelief.  I have enjoyed several of Cantrell’s other books, but I found this character exceptionally engaging.

WOW!. What a story. This is a mystery within a mystery starting in 1949 with a Presidential Car to present day. It's about Joe Tesla , who at first seems "a few bricks short of a full load" but is really a very likeable millionaire who , while in/under Union Station, develops a case of agoraphobia. This is partly about his day to day life underground and the Victorian Mansion that was built in the tunnels long ago.. He has a wonderful psychiatric service animal named Edison that you will fall in love with. There's also a mysterious doctor and what he's developing and who he's testing it on. The characters are terrific and the underground house and the ways Joe is dealing with his problem are believable . I loved it....I can hardly wait for the next story and to find out how Joe got his agoraphobia in the first place...read it, you won't be disappointed

At first I was not sure if I would like this but as I read a few more pages discovered that it is a completely different, fascinating and well written book! A mystery within a mystery, so to speak. The main character, Joe Tesla and his "partner" Edison are so interesting and as the story proceeds you feel as if you know them personally! Then the ending left me in complete suspense and surprise and I just had to buy the next book in the series, I am reading it now and enjoying it just as much as this one. If you want a book that is different, one you don't want to en....get this book.

Once you start reading The World Beneath, don't plan on having time for anything else.  The 1st evening I started it, I was up until 3:30.  I couldn't put it down.  I would have finished it but knew I had to get a few hours of sleep to be able to function in the school library.  Finished it the next night.   Joe Tesla is a millionaire living in NYC.  Currently Joe is living beneath NYC in a mansion located in the subway tunnels.  With no explanation, Joe has suddenly developed agoraphobia which is why he is living in the subway mansion.  Joe is not alone as he has his faithful companion, Edison, his dog.  Edison is definitely an example of man's best friend. Joe's life becomes more complicated and dangerous when he comes across a deranged man in the tunnels banging in a wall.  He identifies himself as subject 535.  Death comes to the tunnels again and Joe is blamed.  Joe is concerned about Edison and arranges for him to stay up in NYC with a friend.  Anyone with a dog  fur baby will understand.  I would think that if a reader doesn't have a dog, they will have the urge to get one after reading The World Beneath. The World Beneath is full of lots of action and suspense.  You forget that you are in the subway tunnels in a limit space and light.  You fear for Joe and Edison as they have been falsely accused.   There are unanswered questions.   I can't wait for another Joe Tesla and Edison story.  He has a new mystery to solve.

This is one of those books that you just sort of fall into and never want it to end.  The characters are engaging and comfortable, so it doesn't take long before you feel like a part of their world.  The chaos taking place under the city is fascinating, the conspiracy that's caused everything is engaging from beginning to end, and there's action and mystery aplenty. My only regret is that book #2 is not yet available.  Book one ends with a satisfying and fulfilling conclusion, but there's a hint of what's to come with the next installment and it's sure to leave you wanting to jump right into the next book.
