Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Each entry in the "An Inside Look" series invites children to explore the details and dynamics of a topic using dense writing, cut-away visuals and other adequately painted but undramatic depictions. Bold-headed, double-page spreads address a particular subtopic while illustrations are dissected with labels and information and a pointer line drawn to the part under discussion. The books are browser friendly and let readers read around in the topics that interest them. A glossary, a mostly workaday selection of more books to read, videos and web sites, including suggestions for using search engines for further information, are included. Because the topic is so wide, this book necessarily covers a lot of material but well enough that much information is conveyed in a little space. For instance, a section about grazing animals includes a cutaway diagram of an impala with parts of its digestive tract labeled and explained, a picture explaining how five grazers eat different parts of the Savannah according to their heights, and a cross-section of an impala's ear. Other animals include bony fish, bats, various sea animals, various mammals, insects, and a section about community life as exemplified by termites. It's a good selection for interested child browsers and may be used by report writers willing to dig a little in the index. 2001 (orig. 1998), Gareth Stevens, $23.93. Ages 8 to 12.
