Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Every person born throughout the world has his or her own special day, better known as the birthday. As part of the "Life Around the World" series, this book gives a brief description of how birthdays are celebrated in many different parts of the world, along with instructions on how to play an accompanying traditional game, make a craft or cook a recipe. The countries included are Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. Side panels are included containing more facts about each specific country; for example, putting birthday candles on a cake started in Germany, shadow puppets are popular in India, and origami is a form of paper art in Japan. The full-color, close-up pictures of children from each country are vivid and capture the happiness and fun of the celebrations. Included are a glossary, a list of books for additional reading, Web sites, and an index. This is a great tool for beginning research writers and for the classroom on a birthday unit. The book is also beneficial for library circulation for parents to use as a guide at home when discussing different cultures with their children. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing,

School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-These attractive books feature the same 10 countries: Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and the U.S. The introductions include two "signs" to look for: one that denotes the need for adult assistance and the other, a pattern to be photocopied. Two spreads are devoted to each country: the first contains brief factual information on a topic of interest and a larger section that describes how birthdays are celebrated or specialty foods, facing a full-color, close-up photograph of smiling children. Two pages of recipe and/or craft ideas follow. Words in bold appear in the glossaries; some pronunciation aids are given in the texts. The material is beautifully presented, concise, and useful, and both titles have wide appeal.-Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
