Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung
In Pixar's animated movie Cars, audiences saw how cocky racecar Lightning McQueen learned the importance of humility and friendship when he was stranded in ghost town Radiator Springs and befriended the motley crew of cop cars, army jeeps, and hippie vans who lived there. Now, in this graphic novel, the other cars take the spotlight as readers learn more about their personal histories. Each chapter focuses on one or two cars as they tell Lightning how they got to Radiator Springs—and why they decided to stay. There is the story of how Ramone (a Chevy Impala Lowrider) fell in love with Flo (a Motorama show car) during her brief stopover. Then there is the tale of how VW Bus Fillmore forms an unexpected friendship with U.S. military jeep Sarge during the Cars' version of Woodstock. And many Cars fans will enjoy reading the story of how dimwitted wrecker tow truck Mater went from being a juvenile delinquent to Radiator Springs' goofy prankster. The stories are considerably more simplistic than the Cars movie and it is a little jarring to see the cars presented in 2-D artwork after getting used to their CGI forms. Still, for Disney Pixar fans hungry for more stories about the Cars automobiles, Cars: Radiator Springs provides a fun continuation. Reviewer: Michael Jung
