Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up-This British import provides a brief and breezy overview of the history of film. Breezy is definitely the operative term here: readers go from silent to sound to current films in fewer than 10 pages. From there they get one-page summaries of various film genres, such as Westerns and horror flicks. The book also includes a cursory look at the technical side of moviemaking, leaving much room for readers to seek more detail elsewhere. One plus is that there is coverage of world cinema, including an interesting section on "Bollywood," the active film industry in India. Boxed yellow inserts called "Out Take" provide some specific tidbits about the topics being discussed. There are also blue sidebars about famous people called "Curriculum vitae." Black-and-white or color photos appear on every page. A glossary of technical terms, a list of cinema notables including both actors and directors, and a reasonably complete index are appended. It should be noted that the book has not been edited for the U.S. market and contains British spellings and metric measurements. The Web sites listed are almost exclusively UK sites. This book would be useful only in very large collections where there is need for a variety of materials for this age group on film history.-Tim Wadham, Maricopa County Library District, Phoenix, AZ Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
