Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Throughout the world, each country celebrates a holiday that has a significant tradition. This book, part of the "Life Around the World" series, gives a brief description about how and why various countries celebrate traditional holidays. Included are activities for the reader that may include a craft, recipe, or game. The countries discussed are Australia, Brazil, Egypt, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, and the United States. Side panels are included that contain more facts about each specific country; for example, January 26 of each year is Australia Day and in Mexico, independence is celebrated on Cinco de Mayo, or May 5, of each year. The full-color, close-up pictures of a child from each country are vivid and capture the happiness and fun in observing a holiday. Included are a glossary, a list of books for additional reading, Web sites, and an index. This is a great tool for beginning research writers and for classroom use on a world holidays unit. The book is also beneficial for circulation in the library for parents to use as a guide at home when discussing different cultures with their children. 2003, Gareth Stevens Publishing,
