World, the Worldby Norman Lewis
Memoirs of a Legendary Traveler: I recently made a pilgrimage to the English village of Finchingfield to call on Norman Lewis, who; has long seemed to me to be the finest travel writer of our times, and who, at eighty-seven, shows no sign of giving up that line of work. His last two books, A Goddess in the Stones and An Empire of the East, both written in his eighties, took him to regions of India and Indonesia so hostile that only a man driven by an unusual set of impulses would have gone there, and when I asked him where his thoughts were turning next he said, 'I've always thought Central Asia would be extremely interesting.'
