Meet the Author

Dr. Dan B. Allender received his MDiv from Westminster Theological Seminary and his PhD in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University.

Dan taught in the Biblical Counseling Department of Grace Theological Seminary for seven years (1983–1989). From 1989–1997 Dan worked as professor in the Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling program at Colorado Christian University, Denver, Colorado. Currently, Dan serves as Professor of Counseling Psychology and President at Mars Hill Graduate School (MHGS.edu) in Seattle, Washington.

He travels and speaks extensively to present his unique perspective on sexual abuse recovery, love and forgiveness, worship, and other related topics. He is the author of The Wounded Heart (NavPress), and has coauthored four books with Dr. Tremper Longman III, Intimate Allies (Tyndale), The Cry of the Soul (NavPress), Bold Love (NavPress), and Breaking the Idols of Your Heart (IVP). Dan and his wife, Rebecca, have three children and live in Seattle, Washington.

    The Wounded Heart for people dealing with the consequences of abuse.

    The Wounded Heart deals with the consequences of of sexual abuse, this book is helping me deal the harsh reality of what happened. It is not for the faint hearted, you must be ready for this journey. I suggest you get help from a therapist or pastor, someone you trust with your life, with your soul.

    It is worth reading if you are ready to deal with and understand the damage of sexual abuse. If you are ready to get healthy. If you are ready to start a journey towards healing. Not of the pain, we know that will never completely be gone but of the damage that was done.

    You should purchase the book by the same name to use in conjuction with this companion workbook.

    A Challenging Workbook for Healing From Abuse

    Dr. Dan Allender, a therapist, minister, and professor, wrote this workbook to help victims of sexual abuse gain a sense of mastery over their feelings. The workbook corresponds with the concepts in the main book, helping the readers to delve even more deeply into their emotions. As he notes in chapter one, there are basic assumptions when engaging in this work: ¿that your ultimate goal is love, no pain relief.¿ This is not an easy task. Allender offers suggestions for using the workbook, including a reminder for the reader to go through it at his/her own pace. As with the main text, the theme of the book presumes the reader¿s belief in God. It may be of benefit to a victim to determine his/her feelings about God in the aftermath of abuse. Allender is clear: ¿For the Christian, hope begins by recognizing the utter hopelessness of our condition and the necessity of divine intervention, if we are to experience true joy.¿ It¿s the reader¿s choice to embrace a religious notion of growth, or not. If a survivor chooses to explore this workbook with an understanding that God is a part of the process of healing, then he/she may find Dr. Allender¿s suggestions for personal and spiritual growth to be valuable. The work toward self-knowledge is difficult, and it is suggested that it be done in a specialized group and/or therapy. The arduous work is also worthwhile, especially when taking back the power that was stolen by the abuser.

    NOT FOR BEGINNERS

    Definately NOT for beginners very intense feelings can arise. Great if you are working with a PROFESSIONAL Counselor and into deeper work.
