Editorial Reviews

VOYA
This collection of professional wrestlers' obituaries originally appeared in Meltzer's own Wrestling Observer newsletter (http://www.wrestlingobserver.com). Although some names, including old timers such as Buddy Rogers, will be unknown to many teen readers, two names that are more current stand out: Owen Hart and Brian Pillman. Both young men died while active members of the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Hart died shockingly during a WWF event when a stunt went horribly wrong, whereas Pillman's death, after years of drug use, was appallingly predictable. Meltzer writes about wrestling as it is, a worked entertainment form—not a real sport but also not a comical farce. He loves the business and the people in it, and his passion rings through all the stories. Most are tragic, portraying the lives of young men, such as Sylvester Ritter (The Junkyard Dog), who as superstars gave their talent then control of their lives over to drugs. Although the author celebrates the wrestlers' achievements, he also explores the underside of the business—the physical exploitation that wrestlers endure willingly and the drug abuse that often seems to go hand-in-hand. This book, unlike Meltzer's newsletter with page after page of small, single-spaced type, is illustrated lavishly with wonderful color photos of the book's various subjects. Casual fans might not care much for Meltzer's book, but older teens who are hooked on the stories beyond the ring will find wrestling's top journalist at his very best here. Photos.
