Overview

Named as one of the 100 best books published for young adults in a 25 year period, The Year Without Michael is the story of a family torn apart when 12 year old Michael disappears one day while going to a friend's house.

Told from the viewpoint of Michael's sixteen year old sister, Jody, the novel explores the heartbreaking torment of a family forced to struggle with unanswerable questions while coping with daily routines and stresses.

Stylistically similar to New York Times best selling author Susan Beth Pfeffer's novel Life As We Knew It, and as emotionally compelling as her most recent novel, Blood Wounds, The Year Without Michael is a classic novel for middle school and high school students and perfect for classroom use.

"The Year Without Michael is a wonderful book on an important topic. Her style- that staccato prose and crackling dialogue- is mesmerizing. I read it in one sitting. Pfeffer breaks your heart but she somehow manages to put it back together again although the edges remain jagged." Robert Cormier

The Year Without Michael is a South Carolina Young Adult Book Award winner, as well as an ALA Best Book For Young Adults, a School Library Journal Best Book, and a Booklist Editor's Choice.

Editorial Reviews

Barbara Chatton
While topical novels abound in literature for young adults, few offer the taut structuring, sound characterization, and honest dialogue that in this case turn a book about a contemporary problem into an exploration of more universal themes." (starred review)
Elinor :Lenz
...a book that offers a sensitive and probing view of a contemporary family in agony. Though it is characterized as contemporary fiction for young adults, "The Year Without Michael" tells its story of breaking apart and coming together with a clarity that should appeal to readers of all ages.

LEFT IN SUSPENSE WITH A GREAT NOVEL

I am a freshman in high school. When I read this book, I wanted to read it (and did) over and over again, yet never got tired of it. The author made the characters with their own personalities, which made me feel like I knew them. The young girl in the book (who was in the seventh grade) reminded me of myself when I was her age. 'Year Without Michael' was a fantastic book, and I highly suggest that when anyone gets the chance, they should read it! It was (and still is) an outstanding book, and it puts the reader in total suspense---even when the book is finished. The author leaves you hanging, wondering, 'what will happen next??'. I could not put the book down.

    Awesome read

This is a really well-written book.

I read it first when I was a teenager, and lent it out, and never received it back.

I finally decided I had to re-read it again (I'm 28 now), and ordered it for my Nook. The book is geared toward teens, but I really think anyone of any age would enjoy it.

It's very easy to get into, and the characters and dialogue are extremely believeable. It's one of those rare books that got me emotionally involved, and broke my heart along the way.

I've read other books by this author, but this one is my favorite.

    Too Much Profanity

This book was good but I don't think we should have to read it in school (which we do have to) when they say things like G-D. Our school requires 18 year olds to have notes to watch a PG movie but we're required (the whole school) to read a book with that kind of language!!

    My Unwanted Review :)

Overall I thihnk this book was pretty good...I just think it would have been better if it was longer and if they found him. I don't really like it when books just...end without telling what happened

    Extremely emotional!!!!

Words can't describe what I got out of this book! It was a real eye opener... I remember crying in my bathroom while reading this book. I even yelled at the characters! This book was so realistic and I'm so happy that I was introduced to it. The ending really made me upset, but it helped me understand that all things don't have a happy ending. Now, I love to read books like this! I recommend this book to all readers.
