The Young Domingo

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Benjamin Ivry
When these recordings were made 30 years ago, Plácido Domingo was a young tenor, but by no means an inexperienced one. The Spanish singer had several years of solid singing behind him at the Tel Aviv Opera before his international career took off with his 1968 Metropolitan Opera debut. The Domingo we hear on this two-CD set has a voice like warm lava from an inexhaustible volcano. No wonder RCA producer Richard Mohr compared him to Beniamino Gigli, another natural resource of vocal power. The selection of arias already show many of the interests that would make Domingo's career one of the most ambitiously varied since the days of Jean de Reszke and Georges Thill. We ...

We hear him in Wagner's "Lohengrin," Tchaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin," and Massenet's "Werther," and although his command of foreign languages would improve much, the essential vocal quality is already present. His dramatic sobriety makes improbable operas like Puccini's cowboy fantasia "La Fanciulla del West" credible like no tenor since Caruso. And there is the well-known Domingo taste for reviving rarities like Leoncavallo's "Chatterton" and Mascagni's "Iris." This set is a worthy forecast of decades of greatness to come, and makes a rich feast of listening for the legion of Domingo aficionados .
