Overview

In Spain, the nuevo flamenco movement of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s has inspired the type of heated debates that surrounded jazz-rock fusion in the U.S. Just as older, hardline jazz purists detested fusion and argued that Miles Davis should have stuck to bebop, older flamenco purists have had no kind words for younger nuevo flamenco artists. Combining flamenco guitar with rock, salsa, merengue or pop, nuevo flamenco is considered musical heresy by purists; meanwhile, its supporters counter that it has kept flamenco fresh and healthy. They're absolutely right; the experimental, risk-taking nature of nuevo flamenco has made for some incredibly exciting listening and kept Spain on the cutting edge of Latin music. One of the many compilations illustrating the genre's vitality is The Young Flamencos, which spans 1983-1990 and boasts first-class material by such nuevo flamenco greats as Jorge Pardo ("Que de Flauta!"), Ketama ("La Barbaria Del Sur," "Me Llama") and the especially rock-minded Pata Negra ("Yo Me Que Quedro En Sevilla" and "Blues De La Frontera"). "Besos De Caramelo" is a passionate, salsa-influenced gem by female singer Aurora, who some have argued is to Madrid's nuevo flamenco scene what Olga Tanon is to 1990s merengue. Boasting informative liner notes and excellent sound quality, this is a CD that those exploring contemporary flamenco should make a point of obtaining.
