Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Martha Shaw
Young people interested in learning to play golf will greatly benefit from this trademark offering by Dorling Kindersley. DK's fine photography, clean design, and organized presentation lend clarity to the varying aspects of the sport such as basic skills, kinds of shots, and special skills. It thoroughly covers all a young player needs to embark on a lifetime of playing golf. Clothing and equipment are discussed, as is the design of golf courses, and golf etiquette. Young female and male players are used equally to demonstrate techniques like grip, swing and putting. It is lamentable that only two photographs of women professional golfers were used compared to ten pictures of men professionals.
School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-Using the familiar series format, Simmons plainly and succinctly describes everything young golfers need to know. The predominant theme seems to be that even if you do not aspire to professional status, "everyone who plays golf can enjoy its challenges and rewards." Pros are pictured throughout, but the vast majority of the excellent photographs feature preteens and young adults. A brief history of the game is followed by detailed explanations of the course, equipment, scoring, rules, grip, swing, shots, and more. Particularly impressive is the inclusion of topics such as sun protection, etiquette, and warm-up exercises. The only disappointment is the negligible coverage of women's golf. Nevertheless, this is an attractive addition to sports collections.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
