Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6 UpThis book is, for the most part, a movie-lover's dream. It's perfect for casual browsing, as well as for reports. It includes a section on the origins of motion pictures and silent films, and then moves through a historical overview. By discussing the most prominent genres, such as comedies, crime films, and musicals, etc., the author gives a good sense of the wide variety of films in a succinct and readily comprehensible way. The oversized volume concludes with a section on film production. Good-quality black-and-white and full-color photographs appear throughout, including some fun poster reproductions. A fact file gives information on important actors, awards, and other interesting bits of trivia. The book is current through 1995. Unfortunately, a few factual errors and some lackluster writing mar an otherwise excellent offering. A disappointing section on horror films gives unnecessary explanations of werewolves and vampires, and defines "doppleganger" twice. Despite these flaws, this title is more complete than Richard Platt's Film (Knopf, 1992).Tim Wadham, Dallas Public Library, TX
