The Youthful Beethoven? Yes, the Youthful Beethoven and the Charming Beethoven, the Sensitive Beethoven, the Gallant Beethoven, and possibly even the gauche Beethoven are all present in these early works by the composer who later became Beethoven. The "E flat Piano Concerto" from 1785 has as much C.P.E. Bach in its style as Mozart in its themes or Haydn in its structures. The "Romance cantabile for Piano, Flute and Bassoon" from 1786 is a darker and more sorrowful Adagio from Mozart's "A major Piano Concerto" with woodwind obbligato. The "Ritterballet" music from 1791 is a limping attempt at a Divertimento à la Mozart. The Youthful Beethoven was a gifted mimic and a talented composer, but he is not by any means a great composer, nor does he sound much like the a composer who could become Beethoven. These characterful performances by the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra are led by conductor Jon Ceander Mitchell, who brings a deft lightness of touch and nary a hint of condescension to Beethoven's youthful indiscretions. Pianist Grigorios Zamparas is a persuasive advocate for the concerto's ardent imitations and, joined by flutist Jana Holaskova and bassoonist Zdenek Skrabal, he makes the case for the "Romance cantabile"'s strained expressivity. If Mitchell and the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra tend to drag by the end of the "Ritterballet," so does the piece. Centaur's 2004 sound is more then clear, but less than transparent.
