Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This is a collection of 33 short essays and "thoughts" by theater scholars and practitioners. The stated purpose is to offer various views of contemporary theater economics, issues, and practice as related to politics, identity, and technology-a snapshot, as it were, of where theater is now and where it is going. Since the question "Is the theater dead?" seems to be raised every decade or so, it's not surprising that the editors have seized the opportunity offered by a new century to ask the question yet again. The word crisis is used unrelentingly; director Robert Levitow, for instance, enumerates six major crises facing the theater and ends with sad regret that his spirit has been broken. Clearly, he is not alone. On the other hand, playwright/director Matthew Maguire argues that the theater has always been dying and is always in crisis and offers several strategies to continue the struggle. British theater professionals Paul Lichtenfels and Lynette Hunter round out the text by offering an interesting look at British theater today. Recommended only for academic libraries with a very strong theater interest.-Susan L. Peters, Univ. of Texas, Galveston Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
