Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Both of these authors bring biblical women alive for late 20th-century women. Owens, a novelist (If You Do Love Old Men, Eerdmans, 1990), writer-in-residence, and professor of English, focuses on women's issues: motherhood, marriage, lack of inclusion, singleness, violence, sensuality, manipulativeness, politics, business, and relationship to the supernatural. For each of these issues, she presents the story of three biblical women (only two for singleness) and makes contemporary connections. Kam's focus is on 21 women or groups of women in the Old Testament and 15 in the New. For each, she gives background, setting the story in its cultural context, then summarizes the biblical story with chapter and verse citations; she follows each summary with reflections closely tied to the biblical story, with a prayer, and then a group of questions or connections designed to help readers find relevance. Kam concludes each chapter with book and page references to other studies by women discussing the same biblical figure. Both works are highly recommended: Owens for reflections on women's perpetual problems and Kam for an understanding of the biblical text and situation.-Carolyn Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, Va.
