For those who want to know how much the British royal family is worth, this book is a godsend. For the rest of us, it's somewhat interesting to learn how their art and jewelry collections and real estate holdings have developed, considering that most monarchs up to and including Queen Victoria inherited massive debts along with the crown. Since that time, however, the royal family has managed rather well; Queen Elizabeth may be the richest woman in the world. Morton's book contains lots of facts and figures, but has no thesis. It is the written equivalent of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous , perhaps. One annoyance is Morton's citation of costs: every item's value is listed in British pounds and U.S. dollar equivalents. The duplicate sums are distracting, and easily convertible by anyone with interest in the subject.-- Katharine Galloway Garstka, Intergraph Corp., Huntsville, Ala.
