Introduction

"Everything old is new again."
It may be a cliché, but it has never been as true as it is today. A fondness for nostalgia and a desire to surround ourselves with things that remind of us of simpler times seems to be a coping mechanism that allows us to navigate through today's high-tech work- a- day world of electronic mail, video conferencing, never-out-of-touch telephone, fax and pager communication, and virtual reality.
Computers and the Internet may have made us more efficient, allowing us to communicate with people from around the world as if they were in our backyard, but these advances have resulted in a more impersonal society; no longer do we have the time to talk with the people in our backyard or sit on our front porch and while away the evening hours.
Experts point out that this phenomenon is what is driving the popularity of fountain pens, fine stationery and the return to hand-written letters-letters that are keepsakes because they carry a personal touch that no E-mail correspondence can possess. They point to the growing trend in antique and collectible buying-certainly spurred on by Web enterprises such as eBay, but also ignited by a desire to recapture souvenirs of the past that we've always wanted to own or possessed once, but lost and now want to regain as souvenirs of our childhood whether they be books, furniture, or treasured toys.
The trend goes beyond collecting, to all facets of our lives. Fashions are retro; movies look back and television has perhaps carved out the biggest niche, particularly among the baby boom generation with the popularity of retro networks such as Nick at Nite and TI/Land, both of which regularly air televisionprograms that were originally broadcast as many as fifty years ago.
Graphic designers recognize this longing-our desire to remember the past, while looking to the future-and are sharing its positive associations with their clients. The past can communicate trust, goodwill, honesty. neighbor1iness and family values-Mayberryesque characteristics that are desired and at least theoretically aspired to by everyone.
But when recreating the past, exactly where do you start? What makes a design hearken back to an earlier era? Sepia photographs and a handwritten script may evoke the i9oos, but they cannot recreate the atmosphere of early twentieth century alone. (End of excerpt)
