Miss Terry's fondness for jumping on the bed in the middle of the night sets the entire household on its ear. As she bounces rambunctiously, furniture rumbles on the floors beneath her and family members and servants alike are tossed from their beds--even Grandma's dentures go flying. Just when another sleepless night seems imminent, the giant troll who lives in the basement is awakened. Not at all amused, he climbs the crooked staircase to the top of the house and solves the problem once and for all. In his debut book, Hawkes employs a limerick-style verse--the perfect vehicle for his tale of utter nonsense, and his intriguing artwork makes good use of dense, well-balanced color. Unusual, imaginative perspectives and open-sided views of the old Victorian house are a real delight. Ages 4-8. (Mar.)

K-Gr 2-- This doggerel verse has very nearly the same cadence as ``Little Miss Muffet,'' and is hardly longer than that old favorite. Little Miss Terry, who looks about five or six years old, creates havoc in the household by jumping up and down on her bed in the middle of the night. The bouncing knocks over her brother's block castle, sends Grandma's dentures flying through the air, jostles the gardener into clipping his handsome mustache instead of the plant he is trimming, and ultimately awakens the troll who lives, mysteriously enough, in the basement. He slinks up the stairs, gives naughty Terry the fright of her life, and gobbles up her mistreated bed. That's all. Compulsive rhythm, bright color, almost no substance. --Joan McGrath, Education Centre Lib . , Toronto, Ontario, Canada
