The present work is one of the very few to which the new postgraduate can turn for an introduction to theoretical methods in the exciting new area of soft condensed matter, containing descriptions of dynamics and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Over the last 15 years connections have been made between polymers, colloids, liquid crystals and self- assemblies, and these have greatly assisted our understanding of a growing amount of experimental data on their dynamic properties: light scattering, rheology, flow-induced phase transitions, X-ray and neutron scattering. Nowhere else have the leading exponents in their fields been brought together to provide a consistent account of the new experimental methods and the outstanding challenges that face the researcher into complex fluids today.
Audience: Suitable as a graduate text as well as for the seasoned researcher. Many contributions conclude with research material stimulated by the discussions at the ASI that gave rise to the book.

Editorial Reviews

McLeish (physics, U. of Leeds, UK) has compiled 19 proceeding papers conveying a sense of the excitement felt in diverse research communities over the dynamic subfield of soft condensed matter physics dubbed complex fluids. The editor notes that they may be read in random-access order, with introductory material interspersed with advanced new work<-->with an effort to "translate" across disciplines. A sampling of titles encompassing both experimental and theoretical issues includes: experimental challenges in colloids, theoretical challenges in polymer dynamics, the shear-flow properties of liquid crystals, of micelles and many-layered vesicles, and dynamics of domains and textures.
