One of the most popular print courses in the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) PASS program has been revised and is now available in an online format. The course includes a print text, Therapeutic Medications in Athletic Training, Second Edition, as well as online activities and an online CEU test.

Medications are used by athletes of all levels to treat hypertension, allergies, asthma, and a host of other conditions. These medications allow athletes to participate in the sports at an optimal level. Thus, as an athletic trainer, you need to keep abreast of the most current medications. Therapeutic Medications in Athletic Training, Second Edition, will help you update your knowledge of commonly used medications.

The text provides the latest information on over-the-counter and prescription medications commonly used in athletics. It will help you review pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic principles and keep informed of the advances in a variety of medications for infections, skin conditions, pain, and inflammation. The text has been expanded to include medications for diabetes and respiratory, gastrointestinal, circulatory, and neurological conditions. It also includes numerous charts to give you easy access to the indications, contraindications, side effects, and adverse reactions for each type of medication. The new online course format features interactive case studies of virtual athletes to help you apply your knowledge of the various medications.

With these updates, this course will make it easier for you to provide the best care possible for your athletes.

Reviewer: Jodi Schneider, MS, ATC (Private Practice)
Description: This comprehensive overview of commonly used medications in athletic training covers basic pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and clinical application.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate athletic trainers on the indications, actions, and risks of commonly used medications, as well as provide an understanding of the basic pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of these drugs. This book thoroughly achieves these objectives in a clear, concise, and easy to understand manner, providing not only an excellent text for students, but an excellent resource for practicing athletic trainers.
Audience: Although it appears to be directed at students, the book would be a valuable reference for practicing athletic trainers as well as other sports medicine professionals. The author, a physician and an athletic trainer, is certainly qualified to write this book.
Features: The author begins by discussing and reviewing basic pharmacology and pharmacodynamics of the medications discussed later in the book. An entire chapter is devoted to medication issues facing athletic trainers. Subsequent chapters cover different classes of medications. Each chapter is outlined with an overview, indications for use, and adverse reactions and is summarized with guidelines for athletic trainers. The chapters also include clear and concise tables. The structure of the chapters provides an excellent foundation in all of drugs that are commonly seen by athletic trainers. The chapters are comprehensive enough for students, but concise enough to be a helpful quick reference for practicing athletic trainers.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive, well written resource. Its structure makes it ideal for students and an excellent reference for practicing athletic trainers. It is a comprehensive but concise resource for athletic training students, practicing athletic trainers, and other sports medicine practitioners.
