Overview

Intended for use in courses where various clinically oriented techniques and methods are presented. Not a modality cookbook, but a presentation for the basis of use for each modality which allows therapist to make their own decisions in a given situation. All therapists use some type of modalities from a simple ice pack to electrical current simulations, and this title features comprehensive coverage of all the therapeutic modalities used in clinical settings. In addition, strong textbook aids such as chapter objectives, lab activities and case studies help clarify and reinforce the material presented.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven Hoffman, PT,ATC,SCS(North Hills Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy)
Description: This book presents the science and clinical procedures of therapeutic modalities for health professionals. The author has assembled a known group of contributors to strengthen the foundation of this text. Each is an expert in rehabilitation with many years of practical, research, and teaching experience.
Purpose: The purpose is to review current research and the clinical application related to the use of physical modalities in rehabilitation medicine. Topics include the healing process that results from using modalities, a complete review of electrical modalities, iontophoresis, biofeedback, and thermal modalities. The editor also includes a complete chapter on ultrasound, the physics of the modality, and clinical utilization. There is a complete section on spinal traction, massage, and manual techniques including joint mobilization and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation.
Audience: This is an invaluable resource for students. I recommend that this text be purchased by all physical therapy departments, educational institutions for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, and those who utilize therapeutic modalities in their treatment regimen for their patient population.
Features: A discussion on the history of modalities and the evolution of the current standard of care is included. Case studies and laboratory activities are also included. Each chapter has a complete reference list substantiating the text. There are numerous pictures, graphs, and practical descriptions that clarify the physiologic review in the narrative.
Assessment: This is not the first book to be written on the topic of therapeutic modalities in rehabilitation medicine, but in my opinion it is one of the best. I recommend that this text be purchased by all physical therapy departments, educational institutions for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants, and any individual who utilizes therapeutic modalities in their treatment regimen for their patient population.
