Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The "Careers in Focus" series comprises 42 slim volumes that offer concise career information divided by industry and/or interest (e.g., agriculture, biology, design, government, social work, and publishing). Over the course of the last ten months, many of the titles have been revised and new ones introduced. Business Managers, Mathematics & Physics, and Therapists make up the spring list. Featuring a user-friendly and standardized format, each volume contains comprehensive articles for 16 to 25 occupations that are taken from Ferguson's four-volume Encyclopedia of Careers and Vocational Guidance (ECVG), now in its 12th edition, but are updated with the latest information available at press time. Each article provides an overview of the field along with information on what the job entails, what the working environment is like, what subjects one should study to pursue the occupation, licensing and certification requirements, resources for further exploration, and much more. Although libraries may purchase the entire "Careers in Focus" set for $771.10 (list price is $963.90), at $179.95 the ECVG is still the safest bet for public libraries, especially those on a tight budget. But academic and school libraries should seriously consider supplementing the ECVG with a few well-chosen (or popular) volumes from the series since its inviting packaging and friendly writing may be more appealing to students. Plus, these tough little hardbacks are built for heavy circulation. [For more on this and other career series, check out the publisher's web site, www.fergpubco.com. Ferguson was recently purchased by Facts On File and is now an imprint of that company.-Ed.] Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
