The chapters cover the topics of normal sleep, physiology, pharmacology, behavioral treatment, and clinical management of the major sleep disorders.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a clinical guide to the practice of sleep medicine, and the chapters provide the latest therapeutic approaches based on the evidence. This is a useful academic resource for any clinician or researcher who works with patients/clients with sleep complaints. The book also includes an access code to additional online content and references.
Audience: It is targeted at physicians, nonphysician providers, or psychologists who work in the field of sleep disorders medicine, but it is also a useful resource for other healthcare professionals who serve clients in a medical setting that treats sleep disorders. The editors are academic experts in their respective fields of pulmonary/critical care medicine, neurology, pediatrics, pharmacology, psychology, and circadian rhythm disorders.
Features: The 60 chapters are organized into 14 sections and the book includes an appendix and an index. The first three sections provide an overview of the background of sleep medicine, as well as the physiology behind pharmacological management with common medications used to treat sleep complaints, such as benzodiazepine receptor agonist medications and psychotropic drugs. Section 4 addresses all aspects of sleep-disordered breathing. Sections 5 and 6 are reviews of treatment for narcolepsy and hypersomnia. Section 7 discusses movement disorders in sleep. Section 8 examines variations in the human circadian rhythm. Section 9 focuses on the presentation of sleep disorders in the pediatric population. Section 10 reviews adult parasomnias. Sections 11-13 examine the presentation of sleep disorders secondary to other comorbidities, such as cardiac disease, chronic pain, neurological disorders, and psychiatric disorders. Finally, Section 14 examines sleep in focused populations including women and the elderly, and looks at the drug effects and sleep.
Assessment: This is a useful compendium for all those interested in the treatment of patients with sleep disorders. The expert opinions offered by the authors result in a valuable resource for practicing clinicians.
