Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jeanne K. Pettenati
Five-year-old Lowell has been waiting all year for his birthday party. He is a member of a very large clan and is anticipating all the cousins, aunts, and uncles that will join his family in the big celebration. But the day threatens a rainstorm-a booming thunderstorm that is bound to cancel the party. Lowell's siblings and parents tell him not to get his hopes up as the day grows darker and darker. Just when Lowell is about to despair, all those relatives take heroic measures to travel to the party. Granny sums it up the best when she says, "Rain means nothing when it comes to one like you." This is a lovely book with charming illustrations that capture Lowell's moods perfectly.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3A "cat and dog pourdown" threatens to wash out Lowell's birthday party. This rhythmic tale mixes Ozark weather lore and steadfast kinship as five-year-old Lowell reports a red sky, low-flying geese, and other indicators as good party omens, but his family tells him otherwise. His optimistic predictions are the only rhyming text in a slightly dialect-tinged narrative. He's convinced that "mama's side can log-ride...papa's side can keg-slide...granny's side can fly on vines" to arrive at the party. Indeed, all come together through a virtual flood for a rollicking good time. The realistic, full-color, water-based illustrations capture the ambiance of the mountain weather, the diversity of the mountain folk, the breadth of the mountain scenery, and the love this family shares. There's plenty of personality in the human figures and lots of motion in each composition. The mostly double-page spreads offer humor, too, such as Lowell's siblings making mischief in the background. An appended list of weather proverbs adds to the book's value. A terrific read-aloud for groups exploring weather, birthdays, or families.Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA
Kirkus Reviews
Old proverbs foretelling rain figure prominently in this tale of a little boy's birthday hopes. Lowell has been scratching the days off his calendar all year in anticipation of his birthday: As he sees it, the family will flock, music will flow, and it will be a proper celebratory hoedown. When a red sky in the morning suggests that all may not go as planned, Lowell's mother is cautious when he brings her word of the glorious dawn. Nor does his father like those low-flying geese, nor granny the flapping oak leaves. But Lowell trusts his Ozark Mountain cousins to make it, his hopes soaring then dimming when each passing sign is interpreted. This is a big-hearted, can-do tale full of good cheer and trusty kinfolk, and the story is given an added verve through Rogers's fine, place-summoning watercolors. In her debut, Hershenhorn includes a list of rain-related proverbs at the end of the book, many of which are right as rain. (Picture book. 6-10)
