Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
This variation on the cumulative rhyme begins with the coyote that swallows a flea, and consequently swallows a variety of animals and objects beginning with a lizard, a snake, and a bird. He then swallows some unique and ridiculous items including a cactus and a bull. The repetitive verse goes on until he swallows the moon and ends with a "Burp! Is breakfast soon?" Nonsensical reasons for swallowing these things add to the absurdity and creativity of each line—"He swallowed the cactus to go with the chile. He swallowed the chile to season the bird." Large, colorful, and amusing illustrations depict the desert southwest, and a goofy?looking coyote adds to the humor. The rhythmic flow lends itself to reading aloud. The amusing situations and comical illustrations will have kids laughing out loud, too. Preschoolers, especially, should enjoy this book.
