Overview

Once upon a time in a place far away, lived a man named Gary Larson who used to draw cartoons. It was a cartoon that appeared for many years in daily newspapers and was loved by millions. (And was confusing to millions more.) But one day he stopped.

Gary went into hiding. He made a couple short films. He played his guitar. He threw sticks for his dogs. They threw some back.

Yet Gary was restless. He couldn't sleep nights. Something haunted him. (Besides Gramps.) Something that would return him to his roots in biology, drawing and dementia—a tale called There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story.

It begins a few inches underground, when a young worm, during a typical family dinner, discovers there's a hair in his plate of dirt. He becomes rather upset, not just about his tainted meal but about his entire miserable, wormy life. This, in turn, spurs his father to tell him a story—a story to inspire the children of invertebrates everywhere.

And so Father Worm describes the saga of a fair young maiden and her adventuresome stroll through her favorite forest, a perambulator's paradise. It is a journey filled with mystery and magic. Or so she thinks.

Which is all we'll say for now.
What exactly does the maiden encounter?
Does Son Worm learn a lesson?
More important, does he eat his plate of fresh dirt?

Well, you'll have to read to find out, but let's just say the answers are right under your feet.

Written and illustrated in a children's storybook style, There's a Hair in My Dirt! A Worm's Story is a twisted take on the difference between our idealized view of Nature and the sometimes cold, hard reality of life for the birds and the bees and the worms (not to mention our own species).

Told with his trademark off-kilter humor, this first original non—Far Side book is the unique work of a comic master.

Now Larson can finally sleep at night. Question is, will you?

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
From the celebrated Far Side comic.
From Barnes & Noble
From the creator of "The Far Side" comes this hilarious faux children's fable. It begins a few inches underneath the forest floor, when, during a typical worm-family dinner, a young whiny worm finds a hair in his dirt. What follows is a father worm's story to his son about idealized nature and the cold reality of life for the birds, the bees -- and the worms! Color illustrations.

Meet the Author

Gary Larrson creator of the phenomenally successful cartoon, The Far Side®, grew up in Tacoma, Washington. As a kid he liked to draw but never formally studied art or considered being a cartoonist. His real love was biology, which ultimately became a frequent topic in his cartoon panel.

Larson has the distinction of having the scientific community name a biting louse and a butterfly after him. He lives in Seattle, Washington—above ground.

    Hilariously Funny

I am a middle schooler who just discovered this book today in my school library. My friend was looking for it in the library and he let me read it... it was insanely funny! it's witty, it's smart, and it's perfect for kids right around our age! No, it's not for little ones, despite the misleading look of it. The illustrations were hilarious. Parents: I wouldn't recommend reading this to the youngsters unless you want to explain what a "sex maniac" is... but it's wonderful for ages 12+! A must-have for any lover of satire and comedy!

    A reviewer

This book was an absoulte revolution of a masterpeice. The complex words, the award winning art, all of which entwined to form a book that not only exceeds some of the best sellers of our modern time (Da Vinci Code, Crank, 1984, The Great Pig Escape, Harry Potter) but as well provides a vivid landscape of imagination and opens the doors to an endless possibility for a sequel novel!

Doing the 'right' thing may really be 'wrong'

What a wonderful story for young and old! Gary Larson has certainly expanded his creative imagination for the sake of learning some very valuable lessons about everyday life. It is a wonderful story for all

    A 'dirty' story

This story is something to read to little inquisitive children, answers many questions of life and has a suprise ending. Makes a great prose piece for those who need pieces for competition.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha..............

I don't normally like to read, but this book caught my eye. There's laughter on every page, who can't use a little of that! I've passed the book to friends, all have loved it. Due to it being a short book with an entertaining cover, it could look like a book for little children, but it's actually for teens and us older folk. I would highly recommend this book. Oh yeah, as I tell everybody, read the pages before you look at the pictures.:) Have a good laugh!

There's a Hair In My Dirt....

and this book is so funny it'l make your hair fall into the dirt laughing. The format and pictures were wonderful, and Gary Larson's sadistic humor is at its best in this comical masterpiece. This is one for the whole family, or at least ages 12 thru 60, because anyone older might be at a health risk from laughing or the shock at the end.

A Kid's Opinion On A Kids' Book; There's A Hair In My Dirt

I liked 'There's A Hair In My Dirt' because it wasn't what you would exactly expect from something that has to do with worms but I thought it was very cute. The author did a great job in my opinion. I also think that it is a great book for kids and I'm a true expert on that!( I am a kid aged 11.) Parents, it sounds really great if you read with enthusiasm. I am not sure why though. I really liked the characters especially the little worm and the lady who loves animals. Iwon't spoil the end for you though. It's a great book. Go Buy It! :):D:):D:):D (Look sideways to see the little faces expressing how I feel about the book.)

    !

It could've been a good book, and very funny, except Larson didn't seem to realize that jokes can be funny without cussing. I was at first drawn to the book by the title, but was dissapointed with it. I'm not sure I'd waste my money on buying it.

And it is wonderfully insightful and funny. Comic books are for kids...Larson is for adults who think like kids. I enjoyed every minute.

    Super Outstanding Terrific

I think this book is so awesome. It proves anyone can be a kid at heart. Lawson is fantastic, the way he throws in little adult humor quips is wonderful and refreshing. What playful adult doesn't love picture books??
