Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Margaret Orto
Hummingbird facts are woven throughout this story of the Baker family—Mom, Dad, Kelly and their dog Digger, as they observe and react to a pair of hummingbirds in their backyard. The Bakers watch a pair of Anna's hummingbirds, participate in a courtship dance, mate, produce fledglings, and prepare the baby birds to leave the nest. Kelly asks the questions and Dad, full of hummingbird knowledge, has the answers. While the interweaving of family story and hummingbird facts is clever, this pattern is interrupted by a narrator's voice simply relaying information. Also, at another point, the flow is broken up by a "how-to" discussing a hummingbird feeder in your own backyard. In a few spots, Dad's dialog sounds purely informational rather than conversational. Despite these flaws, the book is full of fascinating hummingbird facts and the lively and bright illustrations add a nice touch as does the fact that these beautiful and intriguing birds can be observed in a backyard. Additional hummingbird information as well as websites and books for further reading are included at the back. Reviewer: Margaret Orto
