I'm a Mother and I'm OK -- I Think
Every night after I scrub four kids (and sometimes the dog), read
just one more story, give four extra kisses, fall into bed, and recognize
that the man next to me is my husband (I usually only see
him as I whiz by, so he looks different when he's not blurry), I
close my eyes and ask myself, “Was I a good mother today?” And
a little voice inside of me says, “What do you think?”
To be honest, I'm not always sure. If exhaustion has any direct
correlation to good parenting, then I'm at the top of the class
Actually, if moms were to receive a report card each quarter, I
think mine would read:
Full of Love. . . . . . . . . . . . A
Prone to Crankiness . . . . . C
Good Cook . . . . . . . . . . . . C
Organized. . . . . . . . . . . . . Incomplete
Willing to Learn . . . . . . . . A
Am I a good mother? I know that when I relax and stop comparing
myself to others, I feel more confident about my role. I'm
not perfect, by any means. I'm not always the best mom I can be.
But I'm always trying -- and that's got to count for something.
In the pagesthat follow, I want to share with you some of the
lessons I've learned about being a mom. And the first lesson is
this: in every child, there is a perfect little angel. As moms it's our
job to draw these perfect little angels out -- to teach them how to
be who they really are. It's our job to teach them how to fly.
I've discovered that we don't have to be perfect moms to do
this. We just have to love our children unconditionally and be
willing to learn. We just have to try.
The next time you look at your child, tell yourself, “There are
wings in there somewhere.” Your perfect little angel is meant to
soar! You just have to get those wings to start flapping.
