Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—Chock-full of detailed descriptions of rare and common germs and parasites such as MRSA, Ebola, and Bubonic plague, Worm, with its focus on the disgusting, will have the most sangfroid readers fastidiously washing their hands. Determined, self-motivated students will be rewarded with some slick puns and an amusing focus on Australian bugs and their discoverers, suggestions for independent research, scientific names, microscopic images, and unusual depth and breadth for the topic. A hit-and-miss presentation of the urban myth of the supermodel and the tapeworm and a section setting the common tsetse fly against a sterile atomic fly in a prize fight break up the straightforward presentation style of most chapters. Unfortunately, there are errors in the cryptography game, and the book becomes tiresome with its focus on grossness and scariness. The table of contents uses humorous but unclear chapter titles, and there is no index.—S. McClendon, Friends School of Atlanta, Decatur, GA
