Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book has a wonderful premise—it reviews the strange world of microorganisms that live in and on our bodies. The book design is wonderful; instead of flipping to a glossary at the back, difficult terms are highlighted with pastel colors and the definition appears in a sidebar color-coded with the same pastel. The illustrations are computer-colorized electron micrographs of the various bacteria and other microbes. Unfortunately, the text has numerous factual errors, rendering it useless. For instance, the first full-page spread says that Streptococcus pyogenes lives in your mouth and nose. Since this is the germ that causes "strep" throat, it is a good thing that it doesn't usually live in our mouth and nose. Later the book states that mites are protozoans, which is patently wrong (they are arthropods more closely related to insects and spiders, certainly not one-celled protozoans like amebas). These are just two examples, and there were many more. 2000, Millbrook, $24.90. Ages 10 to 14. Reviewer: Dr. Judy Rowen
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-A picture-book introduction to the microorganisms that live on the human body. Beginning with the skin and moving to the respiratory system, mouth, and "guts," Darling explains that most microbes are harmless and may actually be helpful. The text is written in a clear, occasionally humorous style. The scientific vocabulary is highlighted in bold and then defined in small, colored sidebars. The index provides the only access to the material within the book, as there is no table of contents. The illustrations were created with the use of electron microscopy and computer coloring; some magnifications are hundreds or even thousands of times larger than the actual organisms. The cover picture, which features a boy who appears to be around nine, may attract younger readers than the intended audience. Filling a need for newer material in the health area, this title presents valuable information in an accessible format.-Carol Wichman, Northridge Local Schools, Dayton, OH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
